General Motors Co. and its joint venture in China sold more than 780,000 vehicles in China in the first quarter of 2021, up 69 percent year on year.

The U.S. automaker attributed its sales increase in China to luxury and premium vehicles, midsize and large SUVs and multi-purpose vehicles, The Detroit News reported on Tuesday.

To be specific, GM's Buick sales in China in the first quarter rose 73 percent from a year earlier; Cadillac set a first-quarter record with sales of more than 57,000 units, a 114-percent year-over-year increase; and Chevrolet saw a 27-percent increase.

GM China's Wuling brand had sales doubled to more than 347,000 units; and the Baojun brand saw a 5-percent increase.

Earlier, GM reported that it sold 642,250 vehicles in the United States in the first quarter, up 4 percent year on year.
